If you are planning on renting a furnished apartment, there are most likely a list of rules to adhere to regarding the alteration of the unit you will be living in. If you wish to add some personalization to your newly acquired space, consider trying some of the following steps in getting the look you want without upsetting your landlord in the process.

Let Your Landlord Know Your Intentions Before Starting A Project

It is best to ask your landlord what they consider acceptable regarding the way you use your space. If you wish to do something permanent to the space, such as changing the color of the walls, it is best to get permission beforehand so you do not put your security deposit at risk for revocation. Your landlord may actually be excited about alterations you intend on making.

Use Removable Materials To Temporarily Dress Up Your Home

If you are limited in the types of changes you can make within your apartment, consider using removable materials to alter the space's existing appearance on a non-permanent level. Use peel and stick-on tiles to improve the appearance of the backsplash area in your kitchen. Consider swapping existing light fixtures with new ones you purchase to give the area a new appearance. The old ones can be replaced should you decide to leave the apartment in the future. Add contact paper to the interiors of drawers or cabinet doors to dress up the area. Place area rugs around the home and put slip covers over chairs and couches to add your own desired style to your apartment's overall appearance.

Use Wall Decor To Show Your Personal Style

If your landlord is adamant about not altering the rented space or the furniture provided, make some improvements to your walls. If you are not allowed to use nails to hang pictures or mirrors, purchase some temporary hooks to do the job. These can be stuck directly to the wall and then removed when desired. They do not harm the wall's appearance in any way. 

Hang a temporary shelf to hold some of your favorite knickknacks and add wall sconces to hold candles or small lanterns for a unique appearance. Display a quilt or hand-made blanket to dress up a drab wall. Wall hangings can be placed wherever you desire, instantly making the rooms in your new home feel as if they have some of your character incorporated into the decor choices being prominently displayed.
